2020 Winter Hike in Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve and Openlands Lakeshore Preserve - Saturday, January30

A spirited dozen winter hikers met over tailgate coffee and coffee cake at the Fort Sheridan Nature Preserve for a morning hike that featured views of Lake Michigan from a bluff, views also of the distinctive ravines in the preserve, an active federal military cemetery, and several oak savanna remnants. After lunch in warm cars, we went by caravan to the Openlands Lakeshore Preserve, just south of Fort Sheridan, and hiked for another mile or two, obtaining more views of the great lake in winter, and finding enchanting moments walking one of the ravines, paved, though now snow-covered, for hikers and bikers.
