Twenty LSSC bicycle enthusiasts enjoyed our annual summer destination bike trip to Madison, WI from August 16-18.
On Friday evening the group got to know each other a bit better at the wine and cheese gathering with “Member Jeopardy” prior to an orientation session describing the details of the weekend. Thanks to Kathy Kirby for the fine selection of food and beverages. Thanks also for the Evanston Bike Club Members that joined us for the weekend. A few members headed to University Memorial Terrace for the last breathtaking views of a beautiful sunset over Lake Mendota, great people and canine watching and a bit of live music.
Early Saturday morning found two hardy members at the weekly Farmer’s Market at Capitol Square, one of the largest such markets in the country. It was wonderful to talk with the farmers and producers about the products and, of course, sample items along the way for breakfast.
Several riders took on a 40-mile route on the Badger State Trail on Saturday with a stop at the Stewart Tunnel and a lunch in Paoli complete with live music. A few riders ventured into New Glarus conquering some major hills along the way. Unfortunately, one new member had a bike mechanical failure on the way to New Glarus, but with the help of Uber and a local bike shop she was able to get her bike repaired overnight. Definitely a fine example of warm Wisconsin hospitality. Two bikers also enjoyed a day of paddle boarding on Saturday after the discovery of missing bike shoes by one of the riders. Saturday evening was capped off by a dinner and conversation at the Great Dane Brewing company in Fitchburg.
Sunday morning brought a rain but about 12 riders explored more of Madison and shared brunch on Capitol Square. Two members even took advantage of another afternoon of biking around Lake Monona and the Capital City Trail—both part of Madison’s excellent biking infrastructure.
Here are a few comments from those that participated:
Thank you so much for all that you did to make the weekend so much fun…the research on routes and restaurants, activities…the amazing wine and cheese, and the support to everyone along the way!
Thanks again for a great outing. I loved it all. I am much indebted to you for all the organization and care you put it into it.
I’d like to thank you both for this superbly organized trip, it all started with your excellent documentation and continued on the same level. Hoping to join another future trip.
