Chamonix – Mont Blanc, France’s oldest ski resort and site of the first Winter Olympics in 1924 and boasts some of the world’s highest vertical lifts up to 8,000 ft are skiable. The longest run is 15 miles on the world famous Vallee Blanche glacier. Valley ski resorts such as Les Grands Montets (10745 ft), La Filgere (7242 ft), Le Brevgent (8125 ft), Chamonix (3400 ft) to Plan de l’Aiguilles (7556 ft) to Aiguille du Midi (12605 ft) to Gare Helbronner (Italy) are connected by valley bus and the valley has a mix of gondolas, funiculars, cable cars, chairlifts, T bars.
Chamonix, on the banks of the River Arve, is world famous for its views of Mont Blanc to the east, and the Aiguilles Rouges to the west, its restaurants including the Midnight Express (across from La Caleche) home of the world’s biggest best hamburger, and for its nightlife. It was the site for the filming of the James Bond ski chase scene from “The World Is Not Enough”. This part of France is called the Savoie Region, famous for certain wines, certain cheeses, and certain skiers – namely Jean Claude Killy, and the skiing Goitschel sisters, Marielle & Christine. Many, many Olympic GOLD and World Cup victories won by those skiers.
The Area Tourist Bureau can organize an OPTIONAL mid-week mini-bus tour to the resort town of Annecy and thru the Savoie Region, visiting a famous local winery, a famous local cheesery, stopping for a nice catered lunch. The train station in Chamonix connects to Annecy, Dijon, Lyon, Nice, and Paris (Gare Lyon station).
